How do we determine your language level?
Language levels are described using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which puts each level into words. Coursebooks, language exams and courses all follow this scale.
Complete beginner
Knows nothing of the language, or just a handful of words and phrases. Does not know the pronunciation or the alphabet either. Has had little or no contact with the language.
Beginner
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and simple, frequently used sentences. Can introduce themselves and others, give or ask for basic personal details about where they live, things they own and people they know. Can take part in a conversation if the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
Elementary
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment and so on). Can communicate in simple, routine tasks. Can describe in simple terms their background, their surroundings and their immediate needs.
Intermediate
Can understand the main points of clear standard texts on familiar matters such as work, study or leisure. Can deal with most situations likely to arise where the language is spoken. Can describe experiences, events, hopes and ambitions, briefly give reasons for opinions and explain plans.
Upper intermediate
Can understand the main ideas of more complex texts. Can interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes conversation effortless for both sides. Can defend opinions on general topics and set out the pros and cons of different options.
Advanced
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise meaning that is not stated explicitly. Can express themselves spontaneously and fluently. Can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
Expert
Has no difficulty in understanding virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information and arguments from different spoken and written sources and present them coherently. Expresses themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
